  1. Filtration Media: Oil filters consist of a casing or housing that encloses a filtration media. The filtration media is typically made of a porous material, such as cellulose, synthetic fibers, or a combination of both. This material is designed to trap and remove contaminants from the oil as it passes through.

  2. Inlet and Outlet Ports: The oil filter has inlet and outlet ports that allow the flow of oil through the filter. The inlet port is connected to the engine's oil pump, which draws oil from the oil pan and circulates it through the engine. The outlet port is connected to the engine, allowing the filtered oil to return and lubricate the engine components.

  3. Contaminant Removal: As the oil flows into the oil filter, it passes through the filtration media. The filtration media is designed to capture contaminants such as dirt, metal particles, sludge, and other impurities present in the oil. The porous structure of the filtration media allows the oil to flow through while trapping the contaminants.

  4. Bypass Valve: In situations where the oil is too thick or the filter becomes clogged, a bypass valve may be incorporated into the oil filter. The bypass valve is a safety mechanism that allows the oil to bypass the filter element and continue circulating through the engine, ensuring that oil flow is not completely obstructed even when the filter is compromised.

  5. Anti-Drain Back Valve: Some oil filters have an anti-drain back valve. This valve prevents the oil from draining back into the oil pan when the engine is not running. By keeping the oil in the filter, it ensures that the engine components receive immediate lubrication when the engine is started, reducing wear during startup.

  6. Filter Life and Replacement: Over time, the filtration media will become saturated with contaminants, reducing its effectiveness. Oil filters have a recommended service life, typically based on time or mileage, after which they should be replaced. Regularly replacing the oil filter during routine oil changes helps maintain the cleanliness of the engine oil and ensures optimal engine performance.

It's important to choose high-quality oil filters that are compatible with your specific vehicle and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for oil filter replacement intervals. Regularly changing the oil filter along with the engine oil is essential for keeping the engine clean and protecting its components from premature wear and damage.
